Nothing so straightforward. Not with this coach, not with this team, and yet how delightfully bonkers that their evening should end with a place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, via a shootout that culminated with Mason Mount taking the fifth kick and shooting wide.
Tottenham players celebrate after seeing off London rivals Chelsea in a penalty shootout at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Mason Mount right reacts after his miss in the shootout sent Spurs into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
The Chelsea midfielder's effort from 12 yards hit the post following nine perfect penalties during the shootout. For so long until then, Tottenham were on their way out of another cup.
Their first half was a sorry tale of zero purpose and little appetite, characterised by a howler from one of their new hopes, Sergio Reguilon, and the subsequent goal for Timo Werner.
It stayed from the 19th minute until the 76th, when Dier took his break, and on until the 83rd when Erik Lamela poked an equaliser.
Before it crossed, Spurs mostly looked desperate. Fraught, even. At one stage in the first half Mourinho had barked at Frank Lampard and as is often the case these days, those who once danced to his tune just held their ground.
But still it was a slog until the penalties, which in direct contrast to the game were perfect. After Harry Kane, on as a substitute, made it five from five for to Spurs, Mount aimed left and pulled it wide.
Given what he needs to achieve, what he has been brought in to achieve, it could be an immensely important moment. And maybe a turning point.
The Chelsea midfielder left reflects on his miss as Tottenham players celebrate with their goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Tottenham defender Eric Dier sportingly consoles Mount following the end of a well fought cup tie in north London.
Subs not used: Doherty, Sanchez Hart, Davies. Subs not used: Arrizabalaga, Barkley, James, Havertz. Before all that, he will have to put out another blaze because the Dele Alli question has resurfaced.
In the ongoing saga of his place at Spurs, he was dropped for a third matchday squad out of four. If it is the end for Alli, then what a shame.
And what a waste, too. Of course it could be just one more twist in the Mourinho shuffle — another cold shoulder to make Alli run hot.
Or maybe it is just what it looks like — a loss of trust and the start of a goodbye. With Mourinho, in his world of thick smoke and circus mirrors, it really is so hard to tell.
But the brighter prognosis, that this is all a prelude to a grand revival, does feel a little like wishful thinking at this point. In an empty arena which has seen too little of his best, it was a soft reminder of the kind of thing he used to do so well.
While that homage to the past played out on the big screens, the newer blood had their chances below. For Spurs, featuring nine changes to cater for their third game in five days, that meant a debut for Sergio Reguilon, putting him left wing back next to three centre halves in a tweaked system.
Lampard made eight changes but also put out a strong side, with Edouard Mendy given his debut in goal and Ben Chilwell handed a first start.
The upshot of all that tinkering? Chelsea dominated. And Tottenham let them. So while Chelsea pushed, and indeed held 71 per cent of the possession for the first 45 minutes, Spurs sat deep, swallowed up what they could, and looked bloated any time they attempted to get off the couch.
Sergio Reguilon was making his Tottenham debut following his move from Real Madrid but his error led to Chelsea's opening goal as he is easily turned by Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta.
Azpilicueta's cross found Timo Werner whose shot through a crowd of players opened the scoring for Chelsea in the first half.
The breakthrough came on 19 minutes after an unforced error, and cruelly it was also the opening contribution in a Spurs shirt for Reguilon. His first mistake was to get caught in possession by Cesar Azpilicueta, and he was then quickly dropped on his backside in buying a feint from the Spaniard when attempting his recovery.
From there, Azpilicueta rolled low to Werner on the edge of the area and the German finished. So a brutal welcome to Reguilon. His play going forward was generally good, but as ever he will need to learn the pace of British derbies.
In terms of Spurs chances, there was a limited bunch initially. One attack saw Gedson Fernandes close on goal, only for Kurt Zouma to stop him with a tackle of quite brilliant precision, and Erik Lamela also got a shot off that Mendy saved well with his feet.
Tottenham hit back in the second half with Erik Lamela equalising with a poacher's effort seven minutes from time. Lamela celebrates his strike which sent the match to a penalty shootout without the need for extra-time.
Before Mount's miss the shootout saw nine straight converted penalties including from Spurs striker Harry Kane above.
He managed a second excellent save early in the second half in rerouting a Reguilon drive over the bar, and by that point Spurs were managing a period of consistent pressure.
Both Steven Bergwijn and Serge Aurier had chances in a stretch of 15 or so minutes when Chelsea struggled to break from their half.
But for all the improvement, there was no cigar. Kane came on with 20 minutes remaining and with his only opening, hooked a shot off his left boot over the bar.

It's cut out in the nick of time. Chelsea in absolute control as the half-time whistle blows and it couldn't really be going any worse for Jose Mourinho on this reunion with his old club.
Willian the key man, lashing home their first goal early on and then converting a stoppage time penalty to put the Blues in total control.
Anthony Taylor must be stunned his decision was completely flipped on its head by VAR but it was the correct one. Willian slots home and Spurs have an absolute mountain to climb.
It was a crazy moment by Paulo Gazzaniga to rush out of his goal like that and try and clear the ball with a high boot ahead of Marcos Alonso.
Yes, after due consideration, VAR has decided it is a penalty to Chelsea for Gazzaniga's ridiculous high leg challenge on Alonso.
What on earth happened there? Paulo Gazzaniga just misses the ball with a high kick as he races from his goal, then clatters Marcos Alonso, who was chasing it.
VAR is going to check for a penalty. The referee's original call was a free-kick to Spurs. But Chelsea could have a great chance here to double their lead.
Two minutes before half-time and the spark has now ignited in this London derby. Dele Alli was upset by something that happened a few moments ago and got sucked into some off-the-ball handbags with Mateo Kovacic.
That looked a bit nasty - Chelsea keeper Kepa was sold a little short but beat Moussa Sissoko to the ball and then gets clattered as a result.
Sissoko stretched out to try and reach the ball and connected heavily with Kepa, who is thankfully fine to continue. More nice play by Chelsea down the right side inspired by N'Golo Kante but they can't quite get the right ball in.
Dele Alli drops back to make the headed clearance. A worried look on Jose Mourinho's face as Moussa Sissoko pulls up with an apparent problem.
It appears the midfielder will try and run it off. Kurt Zouma in the book after first conceding a foul on Harry Kane and then preventing the Spurs man from taking the quick free-kick.
Spurs have come to life at long last. Kane down the right channel following a long goal kick and Lucas Moura's through ball.
Slips a cross to the far post and Son Heung-min, who connects with his shin and it flies wide. That's much better from Tottenham and their first real chance.
Chelsea on the counter now as Mason Mount finds Tammy Abraham wide on the right and continues his run into the box. Abraham responds with a superb chipped return and it takes a crucial clearance to prevent a certain second goal.
No question that Chelsea look significantly more likely to score a second at the moment than concede an equaliser.
Chelsea still very much the better side and Willian wins a corner off Eric Dier. Not a good delivery by the Brazilian, however, and easily cleared.
But the reality is this formation Frank Lampard has gone out with is troubling Spurs. They don't seem to have planned for it.
All a little scrappy as Spurs search for a way back into the game. As befitting such a tasty derby match, the tackles are flying in as Dele Alli is felled and then Eric Dier is caught by Mason Mount.
The visitors had been much the better side in the opening minutes and Willian takes it upon himself to make the breakthrough. It followed a corner conceded by a back-pedalling Serge Aurier and Willian drove into the Spurs box from the left, worked space to shoot and whipped home a shot into the far corner.
Chelsea have been on top in the opening 10 minutes but that's a very ambitious effort by Antonio Rudiger from 30 yards and it sails into the stand.
Acres of space for Azpilicueta, who is picked out by Willian's cross-field pass. Chelsea break down the left and Mason Mount ignores Cesar Azpilicueta on the overlap to tuck a pass into Tammy Abraham inside the Spurs box.
He spins but can't wriggle free and shoots well off target. Both sides each enjoying their little spells on the ball in the opening few minutes.
A smile, a handshake and an embrace between Jose Mourinho and Frank Lampard on the touchline as we count down the moments until kick-off.
But before the start, a minute of applause and appreciation for England World Cup winner Martin Peters, who passed away yesterday.
We're all set for our second Premier League match of the afternoon and it's a real pre-Christmas cracker. The lights around the stadium flicker and flash as a sold-out crowd welcome Tottenham and Chelsea to the field.
Both teams in their home colours this afternoon - Spurs in white, Chelsea in blue. As it should be. The lights have dimmed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ready for the pre-match light show and that's a surefire sign the action isn't too far away now.
Yeah, there's a slight change, you don't have to be a rocket scientist, but we'll leave it there. Could be better. We had a difficult start but it was understandable.
The good run we had felt great. The messages we are getting across were working. Under Poch there was a lot of build-up play but now they understand they can go direct to Kane and their front four can score.
Jose is building protection in the team. If they push up, can we get on the second balls. If their midfielders get involved then we have quick players who can punish them.

Tanganga, not even a friendly. I decided Hugo not Joe, just to give a sign to my team that we are here to win. I have an incredible negative record on shootouts but today I had a feeling everything was going well, because by far we were the best team and by far the boys deserved to win this match.
Until the end, you never know. Chelsea dominated the first half, whilst Spurs came out fighting in the second, and deserved their equaliser with only seven minutes remaining.
